Capture NX 2: Nikon FX SLR (DF, D1-D5, DD) Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review
I’m still using the NX2 and nik filters to edit my DE pictures. I’d prefer the NX2’s conversion. So it wasn’t possible to process Nef files from cameras released after that. He has updated his program a couple of times to support more recent models and it now converts D and D5 files too. I don’t know if he has issued a D update yet but I’m sure there will be lots of people asking him to.
Here is the link to his Raw2Nef download webpage. There is other current software that costs less than NX2 did years back when still available that is very substantially better for post processing.
Leonard Shepherd Some say if some of your photos are not good the camera you use is only a recording device. Which cheap software with control point functions U point or similar or whatever it was called would you recommend? The whole control point thing has been the only approach I’ve ever found intuitive for me. Very true! Gary — Some Nikon stuff — and a preference for wildlife in natural light www.
Taking Lightroom as an example there are others you can quickly turn round points into ovals and twist them quickly to apply plus or minus to just whites, just highlights, just shadows, just contrast, just exposure, just clarity, just noise etc locally, apply the equivalent of graduated neutral density filters anywhere you want, locally rub out say a dark grad effect in a sky where it overlaps a building; and on an on and on and on.
The Lightroom system is none destructive and applies the adjustments to NEF files. All that happens if you stop subscribing is no further edits are possible. Comparing a D to a D for performance is a bit like comparing NX2 to something like Lightroom – except the software gap is wider. Digressing if you move beyond more than a decade old post processing technology, before getting into something like Lightroom it helps to put your images in a folder order likely to work well in Lightroom.
There’s nothing like CNX2. You have the NEF edited, open it years later, turn edits off, add new edits, compate them, etc, save it again, etc. Then you have u-points, splendid local control, again you add them turn them off, on, edit, save, The actual digital darkroom. I own almost every top end editing software and still find CNX2 is extremely fast for me editing weddings photos, it’s the best raw converter out there for Nikon NEFs.
There are no sidecar files, etc. Open the files any time and good to go. I normally have a photo edited in about 1 minute and printing. The current D reviews as sort of turning me off for my wedding needs, the quitter shutter of the D is something I want to hand on to. Plus the higher ISO nosie seems about the same to no improvement there.
Ha, and I thought I was the only one who still did all of the finishing touches in NX2. I even use the Vignette tool to make a nice double frame. The only problem I have is that many times NX2 will not save a jpeg for me that has been previously run through Lr. So I save a tiff, open that in PS, then save it as the jpeg that I need. Anyone else? You can do this in a lot of other software – by retaining the NEF file complete with edits.
My view is the Lightroom equivalent is at least 5 times more “splendid” than NX2 with far more flexibility. I am not saying do not “soldier on” with NX2 if you want to, just that there are far better and significantly more flexible options at relatively low prices. Thanks for these. I’m sure Lightroom and Photoshop have evolved since I last used them.
But when I did, I found them just too complicated and not intuitive at all. I enjoy taking photos but want to keep the editing part as simple as possible. And don’t usually like processed looking photos. After highlight, shadows, exposure and wb corrections all I would need is just some simple local adjustments to lighten up a face or sharpen an eye a bit and that’s it. Anything with layers is to be avoided If I would force myself to re-learn Photoshop my opinion might change.
But sounds like I need to check what the Lightroom is like these days — my opinion is outdated. In a way it is a bit like moving from film to digital. There is a learning curve to achieve the best out of most to new technology. Thanks, Maybe I should check what the latest version of Lightroom can offer to me. It has been quite some time since I last used it. One thing is that I just hate to invest in software because the resale value isn’t on the same level with lenses or even cameras.
Now that I think about it I hate to buy anything I can’t easily sell later I have no issue buying expensive gear because I know that I can get most of my money back. Sigma’s 35mm F1. Cheers that he will look into if the D will work with CNX2 when he has time, but it looks doubtful right now. Bob P. No text. Another point of view is that NX2 has not been developed for 8 years or more. Leonard Shepherd’s gear list: Leonard Shepherd’s gear list.

Lightroom can do exactly that if it is all you want of it – with your original NEF images. No need for TIFF. Anything with layers is to be avoided Lightroom does not use layers.
